Quarantine means one thing: more time to watch movies that you’ve always wanted to watch. The list can be overwhelming, no doubt about that, so I thought I’d help you out a little bit by choosing 7 films currently streaming on Netflix. What are some of your favorites?

You can think of “Loving Vincent” as a gift for art lovers and movie buffs alike. It’s a mesmerizing look at Vincent Van Gogh’s final days, as elegantly interpreted by a team of 100 professional painters who hand painted every single frame of this truly unique film. That’s right, you’re not just watching a story here, you’re getting lost in its surreal world, making it the world’s first ever fully painted movie. How can you miss that?

Trivia: In the eight years between starting to paint and his death, Vincent van Gogh painted over eight hundred paintings, only one of which was sold in his lifetime (from imdb).

Private Life (2018) directed by Tamara Jenkins | Duration: 2h 3min | Genre: Comedy, Drama

Private Life [2018]
Paul Giamatti can play anything, and he’s completely convincing here as an everyday man going through fertility therapy with his wife (Kahtryn Hahn). In true Woody Allen fashion, a lot of things happen, affecting their personal relationship as well as their relationship with their family. “Private Life” isn’t a morality play; it’s just a really good story about two people trying to start a family of their own. But it does raise a very important question: how far are we willing to go to make that happen? It’s this burning question, presented in everyday terms, that enables us to invest emotionally in this movie, with the help of a fine acting ensemble, which also includes Kayli Carter, John Carroll Lynch and Molly Shannon. I found it very satisfying; in fact, I think it’s one of Netflix’s best movies.

Trivia: After reading the script, Kathryn Hahn was convinced that she had little chance of landing the lead. So she bought a plane ticket to New York City and took Tamara Jenkins out for dinner on a charm offensive. Despite an incident with a spilled glass of wine, it worked (from imdb).

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) directed by Yorgos Lanthimos | Duration: 2h 1min | Genre: Drama, Horror, Mystery

The Killing of a Sacred Deer [2017]
A dark, twisted modern Greek tragedy, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” hits you right between the eyes. Colin Farrell immerses himself completely to a complex role and leaves you shattered. He plays a surgeon and a family man who also happens to hang out with Martin, the 16- year-old son of one of his former patients. Why? That’s the mystery at the core of Yorgos Lanthimos’ mesmerizing film. It’s difficult to talk about the story without revealing key plot points, so that’s all I’m going to say, the better to let you get lost in its dark poetry and intriguing mystery. Lanthimos isn’t interested in satisfying a mainstream audience, but his film is undeniably unique and thought provoking. At the end, you may leave with your head spinning, but “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” will have you talking plenty. 

Trivia: Heart surgery scenes in the film are real. They were filmed during an operation on a real patient who was undergoing quadruple bypass surgery which Colin Farrell attended (from imdb).

Southpaw (2015) directed by Antoine Fuqua | Duration: 2h 4min | Genre: Drama, Sport

You’d think with movies like “Rocky”, “Cinderella Man”, Million Dollar Baby” and “The Fighter”, Hollywood would run out of good boxing stories to tell. Hold on tight. “Southpaw” is a beast of a movie, an emotional roller coaster that threatens to go off the rails, but never does. Jake Gyllenhaal trained for four months and gained 15 pounds of muscle to play light-heavyweight champ Billy Hope. His wife, Maureen (Rachel McAdams), wants him to slow down and spend more time with his family. The plot truly kicks off when Maureen is involved in a shooting accident sparked by Miguel Escobar (Miguel Gomez), a fighter who thinks he can beat Billy anywhere, anytime. How Billy deals with the situation is spoiler territory that merits careful treading. But Gyllenhaal’s ferocity and feeling pull you in. The brutal boxing action is skillfully staged, and all the actors score knockouts. But it’s the fiercely moving family drama that really matters here, and director Antoine Fuqua and his talented crew never lose sight of that. If you’ve never seen “Southpaw”, now’s the time.

Trivia: Eminem was originally scouted for the role, which he accepted and started filming. The film had to be put on hold as Eminem wanted to focus on his music career, so the role was then given to Jake Gyllenhaal (from imdb).

Breathe (2017) directed by Andy Serkis | Duration: 1h 58min | Genre: Biography, Drama, Romance

Breathe [2017]
Andrew Garfield is superb in “Breathe”, completely immersing himself in the role of Robin Cavendish, a British army captain who was taken ill with polio and given just months to live. His wife (played by Claire Foy of “The Crown”), can’t accept it. How could she? Refusing to give up, they decide to escape the hospital life and settle down in their beautiful country house. What happens next is nothing short of inspiring. Based on a true story, “Breathe” is so powerful that even a mediocre adaptation would have been emotional, but director Andy Serkis and Andrew Garfield give it something extra special. This movie was overlooked at the time of its release, but now that it’s on Netflix, I hope it finds the audience it deserves.

Trivia: The real Diana Cavendish (who was played by Claire Foy in this movie), was present during much of the filming. She was eighty-three at the time and travelled to all of the filming locations with the production (from imdb). 

Flight (2012) directed by Robert Zemeckis | Duration: 2h 18min | Genre: Drama, Thriller

Flight [2012]
Sometimes a great actor is all you need to turn a routine movie about addiction into something memorable. That would be Denzel Washington, who is a snapping live wire in the role of Capt. Whip Whitaker, a commercial pilot who performs heroically in the air, but can’t control his own life on the ground. Director Robert Zemeckis is no stranger to air disaster movies (recall “Cast Away” with Tom Hanks). Yet despite its pulse pounding first act, “Flight” is neither an action movie nor a movie with fancy effects. It’s about a man with an addiction, and Zemeckis, at the top of his game, directs with an incredible eye for details. “Flight” is poignant, fierce a heartfelt.

Trivia: In real life, Denzel Washington rarely drinks, and during an interview promoting the film, he claimed he would never play a role genuinely drunk, as the results he has seen have been invariably embarrassing (from imdb).

Phantom Thread (2017) directed by Paul Thomas Anderson | Duration: 2h 10min | Genre: Drama, Romance

Daniel Day Lewis is a genius. Having tackled so many different characters throughout his career (he took home 3 Oscars as a result), he oddly insisted that his role as Reynolds Woodcock, a British dressmaker in the 1950’s would be his very last. A damn shame? You bet. But what a sendoff. Working with the Master himself Paul Thomas Anderson once again (they previously did wonders with “There Will Be Blood”), Lewis dazzles in a film that alludes to 1950’s films, but it’s a richly detailed piece of work all its own, a love story that dares to take its time. From the stunning dresses to Jonny Greenwood’s haunting score, “Phantom Thread” is a feast for the eyes. And Lewis, wearing his role like a second skin, delivers yet another landmark performance. It’s a thing of beauty and terror. Same goes for the movie.

Trivia: Director Paul Thomas Anderson got the initial idea for the film while he was sick in bed one day. His wife, Maya Rudolph, was tending to him and gave him a look that made him realize that she had not looked at him with such tenderness and love in a long time (from imdb).

While not a new release, we recently watched this hit movie on Netflix and can confirm that it still holds up in the comedy stakes. The brilliant Leslie Mann (the flick also co-stars her daughter) and Paul Rudd play a married couple entering their forties juggling the trials and tribulations of their jobs, bathroom boundaries and bringing up tech-obsessed kids. 

This film delivers many laughs and is one that many will find relatable – especially during a time when we are spending so much time at home with the family!


Frozen 2

From big kids to little kids, Frozen 2 will keep everyone happy

Perfect for: Kids of all ages 

If you are a parent to little ones, then chances are you have already watched the blockbuster sequel to the first frozen flick. If, however, you missed it in the cinema, now is your chance to get extra brownie points with your brood and buy it on Apple TV.

An oldie but a goodie from 1993, this childhood classic was recently added to Netflix. Perfect for the whole gang – younger ages included – the story follows Jesse, a troubled young boy, who bonds with a killer whale named Willy. Jesse embarks on a battle to free his new friend back into the wild from owners who want to harm him. 

Sure, there are some sad bits, but this touching film is mainly upbeat and, most importantly, wraps up with a happy ending. 


School of Rock 

The cool kids in School of Rock with their music-obsessed ‘teacher.’

Perfect for: Music-loving kids and adults alike 

Lead by legendary funnyman Jack Black; this pumping comedy is packed with music and fun. Black plays a rock enthusiast who, after being kicked out of his band, takes up a teaching job at a prestigious elementary school despite having no qualifications to do so. The plot sees Black’s character inspire the kids to break out their talent to form their very own band. 

Expect plenty of raucous comedy, hilarious performances and rock ‘n’ roll riffs from this crowd-pleasing flick. 


The Hundred-Foot Journey 

The Hundred-Foot Journey stars Dame Helen Mirren and Charlotte Le Bon

This film is quite literally a feast for the senses. A tale of clashing cultures and cuisine, the flick follows Dame Helen Mirren’s uptight character Madame Mallory, whose fancy gourmet restaurant in the French countryside is disrupted when Hassan Kadam (played by Manish Dayal) and his family move in opposite and open an exotic Indian eatery. 

A rivalry soon breaks out between the two restaurants, until things take an unexpected and heartwarming turn.

Justice League is set to be a superhero film of epic proportions

With an all-star cast featuring your favourite superheroes (including Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman role and Aquaman played by Jason Momoa), this hotly anticipated blockbuster will no doubt reign at the box office. Comic book and action fans will be on the edge of their seats as Bruce Wayne and his newfound ally, Diana Prince, recruit a team of heroes to join forces in fighting a powerful enemy.

Blade Runner 2049

Picking up thirty years after the first film, a new blade runner LAPD officer K (Ryan Gosling) uncovers a deep secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into utter chaos. Driven by his desire to save humanity, the naïve rookie begins a quest to track down former LAPD blade runner (Harrison Ford in fighting form) the man who he believes can help him save society. The only problem – he’s been missing for thirty years.

Mother!

One of the most controversial films of the season, Mother! unites Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence with Bond baddie Javier Bardem in a tense psychological thriller about the unravelling of a couple’s relationship. On one level the story is simple – a woman renovating her home while her partner writes a book finds their tranquil existence threatened by the arrival of uninvited visitors. But as their relationship unravels into a harrowing tale of twisted devotion and sacrifice, critics have chosen to interpret the film as a commentary on anything from relationships to climate change. You will either love it or hate it, but you should definitely see it.

Thor: Ragnarok

Chris Hemsworth is back in swashbuckling form but this time around, he’s lost his hammer (and his hair). Following the events of the previous film, Thor finds himself imprisoned on the other side of the universe. Escaping proves to the be the least of his problems though – once he’s free, the mighty mountain of muscle has to engage in a gladiatorial contest against his former ally and fellow Avenger - The Incredible Hulk - in order to take on arch villain Hela and save his homeworld from destruction.

A seriously creepy remake of the classic horror film, Stephen King’s IT tells the terrifying tale of a corrupt clown (played by the talented Bill Skarsgård) as he hunts a group of kids. The movie smashed industry records with the third largest opening weekend of 2017. The Hitman's Bodyguard

The Beguiled

The long-awaited new film from director Sofia Coppola (of Marie Antoinette and The Bling Ring fame) has finally hit the big screen. Starring Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning, The Beguiled tells a tale of jealousy, betrayal, and revenge as a group of students take in a wounded Union soldier (played by Colin Farrell) during the American Civil War.
